What is Social Media Marketing?
Unless you have lived under a rock, it is obvious the power of social media. A platform that allows people to express themselves and influence others. What is Social Media Marketing? In the simplest terms, the ability to offer your products or services to such a wide audience in today’s world of ever changing marketing.
Basics of marketing
My grandfather use to ask a question in a sarcastic and comedic way. “Was there life before a fax machine?” In his humor he liked to point out that there was a time where business was conducted differently. What he also liked to point out was certain basic fundamentals that are true and have stood the test of time. He worked in a time where:
- It took a few days to return a phone call.
- A deal was made over a meal or at a quiet bar with a simple handshake.
- You built face to face business contacts and followed up with them on a regular basis.
- Created and maintained a relationship with your clients. You remembered Birthdays, anniversaries, or other special events of holidays.
- You offered samples of your product, pens, or promotional materials so that the potential client remembered you when it was time to conduct business.
- Ask for the referrals. Referrals and repeat business is what leads to business success.
So back to the question, What is Social Media Marketing?
It is the natural evolution of Marketing. My Grandfather had a way of sharing hidden gems of wisdom in his sarcasm and humor. Then offering advice after the moment of laughter – or at least a smile, had moved on. Though he was sometimes set in his ways of what used to work, He also showed me that basic principles of marketing has not changed. The rules have never changes, only evolved. What is Social Media Marketing? Social Media Marketing is still marketing. It is not a quick fix or a ride along easy street to instant success. You must:
Create a plan. Implement the plan. Work the plan.
If you are looking for the article that has some quick sneaky secret to make money fast, this is not that article. Besides, even if it did work, the advice would only last temporarily and many others will copy it, or the Social media and SEO channels will find a way to plug it up and even penalize you for it. With a slight edge to fundamentals in marketing, here are tips to ensure success and answer the question, What is Social media marketing.
Steps to effective Social Media Marketing.
Communication in Social media marketing
In the past, It took a few days to return a phone call. Today, you need to be instantly available for video conferencing, Instant message, text, or many of the other ways of instant communication of course the technology of the time was different than today. You need better time management and a certain ability to multi task as you are conferencing on the phone while answering a question over social media or live chat. You must offer multiple ways of communication for the client to reach you. The more ways they can communicate with you, the greater the chance that you will be there
Opening the account is just the start.
Remember the old movie quote, “if you build it, they will come”. This cannot be more untrue. As part of your social media communication plan, you must always continue to provide fresh content to your audience/clients. This is no different as in days past. Constant communication was what made customers buy from you when the time was right for them. Back then, it was a note in the snail mail. Today, it is much faster paced, but still the same. You need to implement a plan to communicate with your audience.

Wether you want to sit back and complain about what once was, or you want to ignore the issue because it seems to complicated, This is the simple truth. According to MIT 11 milliseconds is all the time you have to get someones attention on social media
And even in you get their attention, you have 8 seconds before they move on. NY Times wrote an article that was initially conducted by Microsoft and has since been verified by numerous other colleges and universities. 8 seconds and even your most loyal of followers will move on.

How is it Possible to Market to your customer?
Seems impossible every time I reflect on this. A greater irony is that most of you who read this either did not read this far, or bookmarked it for a later time. I could share the winning lotto numbers somewhere in this article and the odds of someone reading it would be about the same as actually playing the lotto itself.
So how do you combat this? What is Social media marketing when you have so little time? Simply put, use the senses. Image, Video ,and sound. You have too short a window for text. No matter how much wisdom you have to share, remember the short window to capture your audience.
How often do I Post on social Media.
According to a research panel done by Forbes there are many different opinions. Statistical numbers vary slightly but there are some basic truths, no matters whose numbers you are looking at.
- Facebook: Twice a day has been the recommendation for Facebook for many years. As a small business though, you must find a happy balance an a plan that works for you. Less than 3 posts per week, and the numbers drop significantly in likes, followers, and bottom line –the sales. Therefore, we recommend a plan of at least 3 times per week.
- Twitter: Again, according to twitter 1 -5 tweets a day. WOW, that is a lot of tweets. Tweets do have a shorter life span than even that of Facebook. And though it seems difficult, the numbers drop by 25% on less than 1 tweet a day. And yet, studies also showed no drop in audience perception to those who ridiculously posted 50 times a day.
- Google+ – Google even provides a more specific answer. 2 times a day at 9:00 am and 12:00 noon local time if you are reaching a local audience. An d if you are like many companies that conduct business around the country or even the world, then it is a little more difficult to set a specific time.
- Instagram – Posting frequency on Instagram is a little more plausible. Studies showed that 2-3 per week, as long as it is properly posted and optimized is more than sufficient.
- LinkedIn – Linked in has definitely taken the approach quality over quantity. The followers on this social media channel do not want to be bothered with less in depth articles. Take only the best and most in depth article to LinkedIn. It is wise though to offer longer amounts of content up to 1500 words.
What about other Social Media Channels?
What about the others? A good rule of thumb is a minimum of 3 times per week, Know your target markets Social media habits. You need to be where they will see you. Therefore, market the places that are more effective.
In conclusion, 3 posts per social media channel per week is the minimum recommended activity to reach any success on social media
More Tips on What is Social Media Marketing.
Add a Relevant link to your posts, tweets, or published blogs.
Of course it is easy to add your home page link to everything you do. The problem is that the relevant information and content many times is not on your home page. Search engines realize this too. You will gain strength with your social media followers and you will increase in Search engine rankings if your backlinks are to the page or product you are actually promoting.
Promote incentives or discount to your followers.
You must ask for the business. Coach your follower to take the next step. A coupon code or a special just for your followers not only incentives to your audience to act, it also tracks your success rate of your posting. Offer a book or article, a free download, or something relevant to your brand.
Reach out to as many as possible but understand your brand image.
You Sphere of influence and your reputation. The more you post fresh content;
- The wider the audience.
- The more they respect and trust you.
- The more they rely on you as the expert
The other part to this is that your plan must also include what you want your brand image to be. I know this may seem a contradiction to what was just mentioned but your brand image or identity is attractive to a certain type of audience out there. When people follow, like, or subscribe to you, they are buying into this brand image you are offering. Constantly changing this brand image leads to a less loyal following.
Subscribe or follow your Social media competition.
Knowing what your competitors are doing allows you the freedom to make informed decisions on what the next step to take. First of all, look at the successes they are having and secondly the mistakes so that you do not have to repeat them. And finally, measure the frequency of their postings and articles. You will find how often their postings are and what effect they are having in your industry. You will also know what it takes to offer more to your followers than what your competition is doing with greater content and a higher frequency of posts. Remember that you competition is not only those who sell the same product as you, but also the blogs and posts associated to your industry.
Be aware of mobile devices.
Make sure your content and posts look good and are responsive to all types of mobile devices and mediums. Depending on your industry, 25% up to 80% of your audience is looking at you on a mobile device. We believe the number is even higher than that when your audience is following you on the social media marketing channels.
Reuse your old posts but offer better content.
Something that has recently been measured in the SEO world is how often old content gets revised. This is the new baby of the industry and is ever evolving but we know one thing is true. Revised content carries a lot of weight in SEO and it also does in Search engine marketing. Take some old ideas and expand on it, revise it. You can even reveal that a previous article was partially wrong because times have changed. All of this is good for your audience and for your SEO rankings.
If you want to pay for advertising, use the Social media to do it.
The advantage on advertising with Social media is simple. You can target your audience. Social media gathers a wealth of information from its users. And my apologies to many of my friends and viewers for saying this, but this information is for sale. Now it is true, you cannot buy emails from them or their individual information from their users. You can however target a marketing campaign to a:
- Location or proximity to a location.
- Their interests.
- Languages or followers of certain events
Bottom line, if you want to pay for advertising, social media allows you to pay only for your target audience. It is the most cost effective way of using your advertising budget. The cost however is based on the parameters you set and how specific you need to be so you will need to test what is effective and what is not for your company brand.
What is Social Media Marketing if you don’t listen to your clients.
You need to listen to comments and suggestions from your viewing audience. Don’t just look at the analytical data that Google and the social media channels provide. Also be a part of the community and read the comments and respond to it. These comments validate your clients opinions and they will love you for it.
And lastly, be honest about your plan and be consistent.
Develop a plan based on what you can do. Implement the plan, then follow it. Even if all you can do is spend one day a week on your social media campaign, then make that your plan. The biggest mistake is putting it off until you have more time. Let’s be honest, this day will never come. You can manage your time and content by using auto posting soft wares in which you can program your posts weeks in advance. This will help save time and energy.
